In the “World’s Most Influential Scientists” list prepared by Stanford University, I have been on the list for 5 years in a row (since it was initiated).

Frankly speaking, this is not an outstanding achievement for me. On the other hand, I would like to say this to the ignorant, impudent, inadequate, and incompetent individuals who do not understand the motivation that pushes them to say this. A list of 200 thousand among at least 2 million researchers worldwide. There seem to be approximately 200 thousand academics in Turkey, and around 1000 academics made it to the list. Although this is not important to me in the slightest, it should be considered an essential achievement for academic managers, rectors, YOK (the Higher Education Council of Turkey), and the Turkish scientific community.

There is a widely used saying in Turkey: “If you are too modest, the mediocre will dare to give you advice.” I am a person who has experienced this firsthand. Of course, I stand where Socrates stood: “All I know is that I know nothing.” But this does not mean that I know less than the mediocre, that I am weaker than them. On the other hand, I do not prefer to say “people of mediocre” that “you are mediocre .” Further, I do not like to call the mediocre constantly mediocre. Indeed, they do not even realize this. In addition, trying to prove that they are mediocre would also be mediocrity.

Stanford Üniversitesi tarafından hazırlanan “Dünyanın En Etkili Bilim İnsanları” listesinde (başlatıldığı günden bu yana) 5 yıldır üst üste yer alıyorum.

Açıkça konuşmak gerekirse, bu benim için çok büyük bir başarı değil. Diğer yandan da, bunu söylemeye iten motivasyonu anlamayan cahil, arsız, kötü ve yetersiz bireylere de şunu söylemek istiyorum. Dünya çapında en az 2 milyon araştırmacı arasında, 200 bin lik bir liste. Türkiye’de yaklaşık 200 bin akademisyen var görünüyor ve listeye giren 1000 civarında akademisyen var. Bu, her ne kadar benim için zerre kadar önemi olmasa da, yönetici akademisyenler, rektörler, YÖK ve Türkiye Bilim dünyası için önemli bir kazanım olarak değerlendirilmeli.

Türkiye’de çok kullanılan bir deyim var: “Çok mütevazı olursanız, vasat size akıl verme cüretini gösterir.” Ben bunu, birebir deneyimlemiş bir insanım. Tabii ki de, Sokrates’in durduğu nokta da duruyorum: “Bütün bildiğim hiçbir şey bilmediğim.” Ama, bu vasatlardan az bildiğim, onlardan zayıf olduğum anlamına gelmiyor. Vasatlara süreki vasat demek de hoşuma gitmiyor, bunun farkında bile değiller ve onların vasat olduğunu ispatlamaya çalışmak da ayrıca bir vasatlık olurdu
