Today, I received very sad news from Germany. My supervisor at Ph.D., Professor Vyacheslav Zakharyuta, has also passed away. Our Anatolia uses a saying: “This world is a window; the viewer passes by.”

Professor Vyacheslav Zakharyuta was not only a very elegant, distinguished mathematician but also a very good person. It does not need to be said that he was brilliant or a genius, but I, definitely, want to emphasize that he was a very positive and very intellectual person. I think he was a full professor, by all means. You could talk to him about mathematics or a novel from classical literature… Suddenly, you could also see him humming classical music. His knowledge of Atatürk surprised and amazed me. We talked about movies and the songs from the movies. A melody he always hummed, “Sunny Day,” comes to mind. Today, he left us on such a beautiful, sunny day.

I don’t think I would have been able to go through such a difficult process as my Ph.D. without him. In addition to being a leading mathematician in his field, he was a very good example with his always cheerful and hardworking attitude. I especially wanted everyone to see his joy when he was proving a theorem… It was an amazing time… But for a while… Then he doubted the proof, and we re-proved it, and then again, he became happy and joyful… This process repeated several times until he convinced himself enough…

Today, at this time when there are professors who boast about never reading poetry or novels in their lives, I want to say once again how valuable he was.

In an academic sense, I want to say that I am proud and happy to have met a person who has achieved immortality with his articles, which have written his name in golden letters in literature, and to have been his student. At the same time, I am grateful.

Another very beautiful person has passed from this world.

Güle Güle Zakharyuta Hocam, Güle Güle…

Bugün oldukça üzücü bir haber geldi Almanya’dan. Doktora tez danışmanlarımdan Profesör Vyacheslav Zakharyuta da bu dünyadan göçüp gitmiş. Bizim Anadolu’da kullanılan bir söylem var: Bu dünya bir pencere, bakan geçiyor.

Profesör Vyacheslav Zakharyuta yalnızca çok iyi bir matematikçi değildi, aynı zamanda da çok iyi bir insandı. Zeki olduğunu söylemeye bile gerek yok ama çok pozitif ve entelektüel bir insan olduğuna illa ki vurgulamak isterim. Bence gerçek anlamda bir profesördü: Kendisi ile matematik de konuşabilirdiniz, klasik edebiyattan bir kitap hakkında da… Birden, bir klasik müziği mırıldadığına da şahit olabilirdiniz. Atatürk hakkındaki bilgisi beni çok şaşırtmış, hayran bırakmıştı. Sinema filmlerinden de konuştuğumuz oldu, filmin şarkılarından da. Aklıma hep “sun day” diye mırıldandığı bir ezgi geliyor. Bugün de böyle güzel, güneşli bir günde ayrıldı aramızdan.

Doktora gibi çok meşakkatli bir süreci, onsuz geçmem mümkün olacağını sanmıyorum: Alanındaki lider matematikçi oluşu bir yana, her zaman neşeli, her zaman çalışkan duruşuyla çok ama çok iyi bir örnek de oluyordu. Özellikle, bir teoremin ispatını yaptığı o anlardaki neşesini herkesin görmesini isterdim…

Bugün, hayatlarında hiç şiir ya da roman okumadığıyla övünen profesörlerin olduğu bu zamanda, kendisinin ne kadar değerli olduğunu bir kez daha söylemek istiyorum.

Akademik anlamda, adını literatüre altın harflerle yazdırdığı makaleleriyle ölümsüzlüğü ulaşmış bir insanla tanışmış olmaktan, onun öğrenci olmuş olmaktan gurur ve mutluluk duyduğumu söylemek istiyorum. Aynı zamanda da minnettarım…

Bu dünyadan çok güzel bir insan daha geçti.
