I recently learned that Faust, one of Goethe’s most impressive works, is actually based on the alchemist-physician Johann Georg Faust, a real-life figure. One can’t help but wonder: “How wonderful it would be if there were a study comparing the real Faust with Goethe’s Faust?” Currently, we only have the Faust we see through Goethe’s eyes: the Faust in the novel is successful, even very successful. But despite these achievements, his ambition, his greed, his insatiability prevent him from being happy. He knows how little he truly knows, even though he was the most knowledgeable person of his time. As Socrates said, “All I know is that I know nothing,” he must be thinking, because he wants to chase after the truth even more, he wants to know more, he wants to know everything. He wants this so badly that he makes a deal with Mephistopheles, the most well-known and terrifying demon in Christian mythology: He sells his soul to Mephistopheles for unlimited truth, unlimited reality, and pleasure (worldly pleasures).

The Mephistopheles-Faust story is so compelling that thousands of commentaries, studies, and even theses have been written about it. I felt compelled to begin this article with Faust because Faust is truly an academic, and a successful one at that. The evil is that he tramples on all ethical values ​​to pursue the truth—in other words, he sells his soul for the sake of it. Every scientist should have a painting, photograph, or sculpture depicting the Faust-Mephistopheles relationship and its contradiction on their desk or wall. Because behind the fancy words “Science and Technology,” we can talk about experiments, results, and technology that harm humanity. Every endeavor that denies universal moral values ​​and ethical rules will ultimately destroy the soul of humanity.

On the other hand, it’s possible to speak of the ethical violations that render Faust innocent. We can also talk about those who, despite possessing no desire for truth or greater knowledge, seek to find a place in academia, and those who sell their souls for material gain (merely for worldly pleasures). To attain a position they don’t deserve, ethical values ​​must either be absent or eroded. It’s on this point that Goether says: An academic or individual without universal ethical values ​​has no soul; they have sold their soul. Nietzsche needed the concept of uber-mencth for those with souls because he couldn’t remain silent or indifferent to the loss or lack of ethical values ​​in those classified as human.

We can imagine that, in Maslow’s primate, every human being who has fulfilled their physiological needs later falls into a void and begins a search for meaning to fill this void. There are many approaches to the search for meaning, but most people cannot close the void within themselves. To become a superhuman, a human being must internalize universal moral values. This, of course, is not easy. It is not easy for a human being to break free from the imposed paradigm, to have the courage to pursue truth, to embrace freedom and embrace it. The outcome is not very bright. Following these general assessments of the problems of academia worldwide, let’s examine the place of academia in our country in newspaper reports:

Fake publications, fake appointments, fake titles… (It’s impossible to list everything that is fake here…)
Examples of the reflections of organized evil in academia…
Even a scan of newspaper reports from just the last few years reveals hundreds of disgraceful negative events in academia.
So, what is the outcome?
Will there be a result?
Is there any expectation that a result will be achieved?
If results were achieved, wouldn’t there be some reflection in the newspaper reports?
Why aren’t results being achieved?
Isn’t there a desire for results?
How did the academy come to this point?
Why is the academy in this state?

If interviews were conducted on the street, wouldn’t the following responses be elicited?
“They’ll be made to forget.
They’ll be covered up.
They’ll get away with it…
If they have enough connections, they’ll later become administrators, deans, or even rectors!”

I don’t know.
Is the phrase “rotten apple” sufficient to describe this situation? Does it accurately describe the event and the process?
Perhaps the apple is not to blame. Couldn’t the academy itself be rotten?

Does the academy only have a problem with plagiarism?
What about unqualified appointments and promotions?
What about mobbing files?
What about the countless gossip and files that have never been opened or investigated…
What about those who became professors without a doctorate?
What about the professors they trained? They haven’t received any citations?
What about those who publish a few articles in their first few years of academic life, receive a title by chance, and then receive a permanent salary based on the same title?

If academia were a color, it would be “WHITE.”
We also know from Özdemir Asaf (Turkish Poet) that, even if all colors are polluted at the same rate, white always holds the top spot…

The country lacks a serious science policy.

In fact, there is no science policy at all.

If we look a little deeper, we see that there is no large mass of people who need “truth,” the primary concern of science and academia.

In this age, “truth” is not valued:
No society, long subjected to the imposition of virtual reality imposed by various software programs on various screens, channels, and platforms, has any need for reality. Free people need reality; but those who have lost their freedom, or even surrendered it themselves, have no need for any truth of life. They need propaganda, lies, and more lies. They need fear. They need virtual/fake/cheap victories. Those who boast about their birthplace and the titles bestowed upon them by that land, simply because they have no achievements to be proud of or proud of, have no need for truth. On the contrary, they will become enemies of truth.

If truth isn’t a necessity, there’s no need for an academic or academy pursuing the truth. There’s a need for an academy that “pretends” to be pursued. It needs to be made as if the truth is being pursued. These pseudo-academics need to distort the truth to further enrich a select few. We need explanations that no true academic would accept. For example, we need those who justify the destruction of millennia-old olive groves and the destruction of nature and the poisoning of it with cyanide.

In other words…
As if it were the future of humanity, not a rotting apple…

So what should be done?
I think we should first pose the problem. All aspects of the problem should be discussed honestly and sincerely. As we always say in mathematics: Understanding the problem is half the solution. I’m leaving a piece of the picture on the table. If one day a genuine will to solve the problem takes shape, I want to contribute as much as an ant carrying water to a fire with its mouth. I want my side to be clear: an academy composed of academics who practice science for a “world and humanity” in peace and harmony and who hold universal values.

Biraz da derinlemesine bakılırsa, bilimin ve akademinin ana derdi olan “gerçeğe” ihtiyaç duyan büyük bir kitle yok.

Bu çağda, “gerçek” prim yapmıyor:
Çeşitli yazılımların, çeşitli ekranlardan, kanallardan, platformlardan dayattığı sanal gerçeklik dayatmasına uzun süredir maruz kalan hiç bir toplumun gerçekliğe ihtiyacı kalmıyor. Özgür insanların gerçekliğe ihtiyacı vardır; ama özgürlüklerini kaybetmiş, hatta kendi elleriyle teslim etmiş insanların hayatın hiç bir gerçeğine ihtiyacı yok. Bu sahte akademisyenlerin, gerçeği çarpıtarak, bir grup zengini daha zengin etmek için gerçekleri çarpıtılmasına ihtiyaç var. Gerçek hiç bir akademisyenin razı olamayacağı açıklamalara ihtiyaç var. Mesela, bin yıllık zeytinliklerin ve doğanın katledilip, siyanürle zehirlenmesini haklı göstereceklere ihtiyaç var…

Peki ne yapmalı?
Bence, önce sorunu ortaya koymalı. Dürüst ve samimi bir şekilde sorunun tüm yönleri masaya yatırılmalı. Matematikte hep söylediğimiz bir söz var: Soruyu anlamak, çözümün yarısıdır. Ben resmin bir kısmını masaya bırakıyorum. Bir gün, sorunu çözmek isteyen gerçek bir irade şekillenirse, ağzıyla ateşe söndürmek için su taşıyan bir karınca kadar katkım olsun istiyorum.
